Hero Never Walks Again!
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
Augustine Smith removed from Westmoreland County Virginia with his parents to Amherst County when he was but a small boy. At the onset of the Revolutionary War, he enlisted in the 7th Virginia Regiment for two years under Captain Samuel Cabell but after receiving an injury to his back, was given a furlough to recover. On his way home, he was met up with his brother, John Smith and Joel Shropshire. Upon arriving home, however, he was unable to walk or get out of bed for several years. Later on, when Amherst County became known as Nelson County, he died intestate. The executor of his estate testified that he was never married and had no surviving children. The estate was left to his sisters. These sort of details, pieced together from a Revolutionary War Pension and the estate of Augustine Smith, provides sufficient information to settle the life of Augustine Smith.
