Charles Carter of the Famous Shirley Plantation

Shirley plantation in Charles City County, Virginia completed ca 1738
The lands of Shirley Plantation were first settled in 1638 by Edward Hill via a land grant of 450 acres.  From then on, it passed down to the Hill family in whose possession it has remained.  Later, the property passed to the daughter of Edward Hill III's youngest daughter Elizabeth who married John Carter, the eldest son of Robert "King" Carter.  The house has been occupied by Hill descendants since 1738.  This is where Ann Hill Carter was born, the wife of Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee. The last wills and testaments of the famous Charles Carter of Shirley Plantation, as well as those of Mildred and Robert Carter are available for viewing on Virginia Pioneers
