Williamsburg during the Revolutionary War

When one visits Williamsburg today the impression is one of white cottages lining a dirt street and probably the most beautiful Governor's Palace of the colonial period. During the war the city fell into I'll repair. The college of William and Mary was used as a hospital and a dirty one at that. If it were not for the French troops quartered there the city would have lost it's economy and charm. An artillery officer stationed near West Point, Clermont-Crevecoeur, wrote: "These people are very hospital and receive you in a most cordial manner."
